REDOX REACTIONS

Learning outcome

  • Students will be able to define oxidation and reduction.
  • Students will be able to identify redox reactions.
  • Students will be able to identify reducing and oxidising agents.
  • Students will be able relate redox reactions to everyday life.

Simple Note

The word "Redox" is a combination of two words:

  • Reduction

  • Oxidation

This tells us that in any redox reaction, reduction and oxidation always happen together! You can't have one without the other.

Oxidation:

  • It's the addition of oxygen.

  • It's the removal of hydrogen.

  • It's the loss of electrons

Reduction:

  • It's the removal of oxygen.

  • It's the addition of hydrogen.

  • It's the gain of electrons.

Self assessment questions

1) True or False (State whether the following statements are True or False)
  1. Oxidation involves the gain of oxygen.

  2. Reduction involves the removal of hydrogen.

  3. A redox reaction means only oxidation occurs.

  4. Rusting of iron is an example of reduction.

  5. An oxidizing agent itself gets oxidized.

2Which of the following is an example of oxidation? a) Removal of oxygen b) Addition of hydrogen c) Rusting of iron d) Formation of water from oxygen and hydrogen

3) Define oxidation in terms of oxygen and hydrogen.

4) Define reduction in terms of oxygen and hydrogen.

5) In the following reaction, identify which substance is oxidized and which is reduced:
                         ZnO + C → Zn + CO
