REDOX REACTIONS
Learning outcome
- Students will be able to define oxidation and reduction.
- Students will be able to identify redox reactions.
- Students will be able to identify reducing and oxidising agents.
- Students will be able relate redox reactions to everyday life.
The word "Redox" is a combination of two words:
Reduction
Oxidation
This tells us that in any redox reaction, reduction and oxidation always happen together! You can't have one without the other.
Oxidation:
It's the addition of oxygen.
It's the removal of hydrogen.
It's the loss of electrons
Reduction:
It's the removal of oxygen.
It's the addition of hydrogen.
It's the gain of electrons.
Self assessment questions
Oxidation involves the gain of oxygen.
Reduction involves the removal of hydrogen.
A redox reaction means only oxidation occurs.
Rusting of iron is an example of reduction.
An oxidizing agent itself gets oxidized.
ZnO + C → Zn + CO
